Dream Big Ghana NGO helps to bring life-saving sanitation and life-changing educational opportunities to Dzita and Dzita-Agbledomi, the two communities either side of Meet Me There Lodge.

Our sanitation work covers family and school facilities and has grown considerably in recent years.  We are concerned with not just the provision of a physical toilet, but also with the accompanying health and hygiene education that is taken for granted in the West. All our toilets are ecological sanitation (EcoSan) toilets. EcoSan toilets are above ground units that recycle human waste, and use natural processes to transform that waste into a safe, organic compost and fertilizer.

Families provide the land where toilets are installed, and make a small contribution to the cost of providing the facility. This encourages a strong sense of pride, thus leading to greater ownership and sustainability.

  • Since starting our work in 2010, we have built 116 EcoSan toilets for families.  This has brought health, safety and dignity to around 3,000 children, women and men in Dzita and Dzita Agbledomi. A worthy achievement, but still a long way to go before everyone has access to safe sanitation!

Education and learning changes lives. Accordingly, we facilitate and support activities and initiatives that have the potential to improve the lives and livelihoods of local people. Through the work of the multi-functional Dream Big Community Leaning Centre, we empower young people and adult learners so that they can help themselves to take the first steps out of poverty. As well as supporting the development of literacy and numeracy skills, the Learning Centre acts as a central hub for activities considered important to our village communities – including health and hygiene education, homework support, ICT skills, arts and craft, dancing, drumming and other cultural activities.

  • Since it opened in March 2017, there have been more than 7,000 visits to the Dream Big Community Learning Centre, demonstrating the hunger for learning in our village communities!

Football, netball, volley ball and hand ball are all very popular in Ghana and can be used as a great tool for community development. We facilitate a coaching programme which caters for girls as well as boys. In addition to providing mental and physical benefits, participation in the programme teaches young people vital life skills such as discipline and team work. It can also bring an important sense of self-worth and belonging.

We have recently completed a project improving facilities at the ‘Sahara Park’ – a community space where we run our Sports coaching programme. Improvements in hand include the construction of a children’s play area, an outdoor gym, a shaded area for players / spectators and an EcoSan toilet. The improvements will greatly aid the social, environmental and economic development of the village communities we serve. A big thanks goes out to our fantastic intern Mr Dominic Bride for all his hard work he has put in to get us to where we are with the programme. Dom has been busy writing proposals, collecting data, planning and designing the new space and even building and assembling the apparatus.
